Making Homemade Apple Juice

I had to document this process – as this was the first time – EVER – I’ve tried doing this. So, for good measure – and possibly a good laugh down the road, I figured I’d share my experience with making homemade apple juice. šŸ™‚

My husband and I have been on a mission this year … to start making our own food and drink. Not that we’ve never cooked before – but after learning and researching the food industry in America, it’s quite disheartening to learn what they’re putting in the things you and I put into our bodies daily.

So – this year – we wanted to make some lifestyle changes, starting with our diet – and our son’s too!

Now, my husband is quite the cook. Myself on the other hand, I wouldn’t call myself domestic. But I’m getting there! šŸ™‚

Anyway, this process went smoother than what I thought. And honestly, the juice is quite tasty! Plus, the ‘mash’ that you’re left with … well, you can make applesauce from that!

Here’s to the REAL food … and DRINK movement of 2013.


First picked out the juiciest looking apples I could find. Rinsed them and scrubbed them well.


Sliced them and placed them into a pan, with about 2 inches of water and started to simmer them at medium heat, eventually covering.


This is what it looks like after simmering, covered, for about 15 minutes or so. I mashed the apples with a potato masher, to help the process along. Seemed to work quite well!


From there, I strained the ‘mash’ into a large mixing bowl, for about 10 minutes. I pressed the mash down into the strainer to get as much juice as I could!


I then strained it down even further – as this is for our little boy Eli! I just used a smaller wedged strainer. Which got out many of the bits.


All and all, the process was fairly painless. šŸ™‚ And I got a whole jar of the ‘good stuff’ for our little man to enjoy!
