Blogging Challenge Day 3: Snap a picture – then what?!

I struggled a little with today’s blogging challenge: “Teach Your Audience How To Do Something”. I wasn’t entirely sure what I could teach – or really – anything that people would actually care to learn from me! So … I decided to write a little something about preservation of memories – with photographs – and then what to do with them, after! It’s not necessarily a ‘how to’, but more of an idea list – to perhaps generate a few ideas in your head to display your family memories.

The amazing thing about digital photography is you can take thousands of images, keep what you like, delete what you don’t. But at the end of the day, that’s still all you have – the digital images. There is nothing tangible that allows you to really SEE them.

Now these are just a few ideas that I’ve found have worked for myself and my family – but you can definitely take these ideas and make them your own – or perhaps another idea has fluttered into your brilliant brain, which I’d love for you to share in the comments section of this blog! 🙂

Create a Picture Wall
Pick a wall in your home and designate it for pictures. I think everyone should have one. It’s a great way to showcase your growing children, your extended family/friends, or your latest photographic masterpiece. Check out local garage sales or thrift shops and purchase inexpensive frames of different sizes. Print some of your favorite images, add them to the frames, and then hang them sporadically on your designated wall. It’s as easy as that! We use MonkeyHooks. They’re easy to use and you don’t need any tools! Check em’ out here: http://www.monkeyhook.com/. Also, I always, always, always recommend printing your images with a pro lab, like Mpix: http://www.mpix.com/. They are VERY comparable to some of the larger printing labs, but the quality far surpasses them. I mean they have prints starting at 19¢!

So this is my lame attempt at a picture wall in my home! It’s a work in progress, but I figured I’d at least show you a frame of reference. You can do whatever you want though – mix up the frames, put them at different heights – make it unique and fit for YOUR family!

Make a Photo Book
There are a variety of companies out there that allow you to take your photos and create beautiful books with them. My favorite is MyPublisher. Not only do they have their own design software, but you can have them design your book and order your pictures in one easy step. The nice part about it is you can change things around so the book mirrors exactly what you want. Whether it’s your family portraits, your wedding day or a ‘just because’ book, you can have something tangible to pass down from generation to generation. A few other companies to check out are Artifact Uprising and Blurb. I’ve used all three and have never been disappointed!

I created this album using MyPublisher, for my good friends from England. I had the chance to travel there and photograph some of their ‘Big Day’! What a privilege. But this album was easy to create and I could use the pictures they wanted, and could organize them in a way that ‘told their story’.

Scrapbook with Project Life
I know, I know. Scrapbooking sounds tedious. Overwhelming. And downright is not appealing to most folks out there. I give it to any person who has ever sat down and attempted to scrapbook anything! I definitely don’t have the know-how or the patience. And I’m just being real here … ok, ok, I’m done complaining … so I recently discovered a ‘different’ way to scrapbook and it’s revolutionary! It requires no cutting. No gluing. Cuts the time you’re documenting your memories, in half, which creates more time to make even more memories!

Create a Photo Story Slideshow with Animoto

When I first discovered Animoto, I was blown away with the ‘easy-to-use’ interface – and really, the sheer ease of creating a video slideshow in a matter of minutes! The cool part about this program – and this company – is you don’t have to be a professional photographer to use it! Anyone can create an account and create beautiful slideshows and share them with friends and family! I use this product for my business and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told how meaningful the slideshows are. Below is just an example of a slideshow I did earlier this year, from a family trip out to California! The cool thing about Animoto is it has licenses for a variety of music, which YOU can select to go along with your images. And there are 100s, if not thousands of songs to select from! Another cool feature is the option to add text – and video! The system is incredibly easy to use and it really is a matter of uploading your photos/video, selecting a tune, and that’s it! You can check out your YouTube channel for examples of other videos we’ve done this year to check out other styles/options – but check this company out today to create an account and start creating some videos yourself!

I am not in any way associated with these companies, but I have been using them for years. They really have helped me output not only my clients’ images, but my own, into beautiful pieces of art that I can cherish for years to come! So go on – get out there and take some photos – then do something with them! And most importantly, have some fun with the ones you love and make some lasting memories!!
